BCMB Annual Retreat
The Annual BCMB Retreat is held in early fall, and is attended by faculty members, all first year BCMB students, and many upper-class students. An alumnus of the program is invited as the Keynote Speaker. The faculty and upper-class students present brief talks and posters on their research. The retreat provides a wonderful opportunity for incoming students to become acquainted with the faculty and older students, and to learn about research opportunities.
The 2015 BCMB Retreat was held on October 4 - 5 at Harbourtowne Golf Resort & Conference Center in beautiful St. Michael's, Maryland.
BCMB Annual Retreat Keynote Address by Dr. Jason Rao, BCMB Alumnus
BCMB alum Jason Rao took a chance on a “non-traditional” career path, leaving his post doc at the NIH in 2002 for an AAAS Diplomacy Fellowship at the U.S. Department of State. Three days into the job, Dr. Rao was sent to Siberia, with the following assignment “engage former biological weapons scientists, redirect them toward more peaceful, collaborative endeavors”. What started as a yearlong fellowship became a decade long adventure at the State Department, living in Russia, Indonesia and Pakistan. In 2009 Dr. Rao was invited to serve in the White House, Office of Science and Technology Policy, as President Obama’s Senior Advisor for Global Science Engagement.
